GRANTIE FALLS, Minn. -- Before getting started at Bootleggers Supper Club, John Berends spent 15 years in Minneapolis selling insurance and as a commodity broker.

Even though he had these other jobs, Berends always found time to work at least part time for some restaurants in the cities.

"I worked at Anthony's Warf for 15 years every summer," said Berends. "I always had my feet in the door with the restaurant business."

After 15 years in Minneapolis, Berends decided it was time to head home to Granite Falls.. When he came home, he saw that a building was for sale. Berends and his partners bought it and started the supper club.

"After we bought the place, we did some painting and replaced the flooring," said Berends. "We have been slowly but surely making more improvements to the supper club."

Berends decided he wanted it the Bootleggers Supper Club.

More than 90 percent of the menu items are made from scratch. The menu includes Mexican and Italian dishes and different specials each week.

Berends believes is having new and fresh food available for the customers every day.

"I grew up with homemade food, so I am used to having everything made from scratch and fresh," said Berends. "To me it makes the quality of the food just that much better."

Bootleggers hosts weddings and other special events.

"Twenty-five to 30 percent of our business is banquets and catering for events like reunions, weddings and holiday parties," said Berends. "We have a banquet room that holds about 350 people and we are looking to hopefully expand that end of our business one day."

Berends asks people for feedback.

"It is very rewarding when the customers have been impressed and have been pleased with what we do," said Berends.

During Ole and Lena week, Bootleggers hosted beer tasting for charity. They also have poker leagues on Wednesdays and many other activities. Local musicians play dinner music from 6:30-10 p.m. every Friday night from January to March.

Berends sends e-mails and free newsletters to customers.

"It has been very well recieved, and I know that because if someone doesn't get their newsletter or e-mail, they let me know about it," said Berends. "We are looking to do more stuff like this with technology. We are looking to put up a blog and we are also trying to get specials text messaged to people that sign up for it. It wouldn't cost anything unless you don't have the free text messages in your plan."
