ST. PAUL -- A former University of Minnesota Extension agronomist and soil fertility specialist has been named senior associate dean for Extension and research.

Michael A. Schmitt was named to the newly created University of Minnesota Extension position on Oct. 1.

In his new role, Schmitt will oversee all Extension programming and provide leadership for Extension research work. His job will be to make sure Extension staff are collaborating rather than overlapping when providing services to individuals, families and communities.

"With Mike's experience and leadership in this new position, Extension will be even better positioned to respond to the needs of real people and real issues, while also contributing to the university's goal to become one of the world's top research institutions," said Bev Durgan, U of M Extension dean.

For the past seven years, Schmitt has been the Extension agriculture and food program leader. He has been with the university for 20 years.

Schmitt is now charged with providing leadership and vision for Extension programs in agriculture, community vitality, family development, natural resources and youth development. To provide that vision, Schmitt says it's important to keep listening. The vision of Extension will change based on what it hears and what resources it has. Extension must be nimble, adept and current, he said.

He will also lead grants development and manage faculty and staff development efforts.

"Extension programming touches all aspects of people's lives," Schmitt said. "I look forward to providing leadership on issues ranging from disaster response to healthy foods, rural life, renewable energy and urban greenspace."
